Topic - Information Economy - Algorithmically Driven Echo Chambers
For Nasif and my disobedient electronic, we designed the “Hungry Mind Balanced Media Diet” TV dinner inspired device.
How we arrived at this device:
- The topic we chose was something that we agreed on was equally as interesting to both of us. From that point, we felt that we needed to connect this to the edible attribute, as it felt very specific and easily malleable to a variety of topics. We identified the terminology used by social media sites like reddit and facebook sharing words related to eating (feed, digest). Journalists talking about media consumption also use a vocabulary that sounds food related (media diet, media consumption).
- After zeroing in on this shared vocabulary, it seemed like the logical next step was to place some of the content from social media sites that comes from political echo chambers into the context of a food space. We settled on reddit because of the organized structure of subreddits and the free API to call posts and comments from the site. Our original plan was to use a classic ceramic dinner plate.
- The TV dinner tray form provided us a way to organize the content we wanted to share with compartments while still being related to food and also giving us a general direction for packaging. TV dinners also carry baggage about being mass-produced and being eaten by people by themselves without companions. These two details resonated as similar to our feelings about people taking part in information siloed social media. They are being fed heavily processed information and typically physically alone when engaging with these online communities.
- The final execution of our device includes a plastic wrapper with a logo displaying the title of the work. This plastic is meant to further the illusion of a tv dinner.
