Week 3

Martina Flor’s TED Talk on Letter Design did not give me much new insight on letter design and text layout, which may have been because of either the short format of the talk or the intention to be surface level with the content. After a few weeks in our course, we have covered the basics of what she is saying, even if we have not looked at it specifically in this context. Spacing, font, layout and sizing have all been discussed, at length during our class-long critique sessions. The talk was not bad, but I do not feel that it added much value to my current understanding of letter design.

Working on my three expressive words was a fun experience. Initially, I had a really tough time picking what words to land on, but I ended up with “Inside”, “Marshmallow”, and “Focus”. I tried to apply a different process of design to each font, just to keep it fresh for myself. “Inside” was made manipulating the alignment and size of the letter forms. “Marshmallow” was made by generating a 3D form of the letters and applying a creased white plastic texture to them. “Focus” was made by adding a gaussian blur effect to the letters.

Font list so I remember for class if asked -

“Inside” - Cooper Std

“Marshmallow” - Modak

“Focus” - PT Sans
