Last assignment for the class! This is my take on the Winter Show poster design. Admittedly, I designed the poster before I read the prompt that the design should be highlighting the humanistic aspects of ITP; I understand my design might feel somewhat cold after expecting such criteria. I do believe my design actually does fit the human qualities of ITP from the concepts I was working with. I thought about the fact that everyone is coming from completely different backgrounds, various fields of employments and generally from all over the world. We are all completely different and fit into many different social and societal fabrics, yet we all fit together so well. ITP students come from everywhere and fit into other places, yet they truly shine with each other. The vertical slashes fit with the backslashes, yet they form a cohesive separate body when arranged together.
From a technical POV, this design was something I had imagined without any sketches and was mostly inspired by ASCII style art found on forums, chat rooms, and all over the internet. I liked using both the NYU specific font family and the funky ITP/IMA logo. I cannot find much about the history of its design, but the organic qualities of it really caught my eye. As for a grid structure, everything is based around rectangles and squares. Due to that, text organized itself very neatly. Keeping the color restrained to black and white adds a minimalist quality to the design, which I was worried would be too busy with color. I toyed with making the back slashes green like an old computer terminal but I did not want to lean into the techy vibe that hard.
Overall, I am really happy with the poster. I am not sure it is what the faculty want, but I think the image is powerful, a little trippy, and fun to look at. It conveys the message well and I think it would get attention from people.
